College Football Rule Changes
We had some big news Friday that will make Defensive Coordinators across college football happy & they all affect the length of the game. Here's what we got:
The game clock will continue to run when a first down is gained except for during the last two minutes of either half (not for D3..yet).
Teams will be prohibited from calling consecutive team timeouts.
Penalties at the end of the first and third quarter will carry over and be enforced on the first play of the next quarter.
These new changes coming will lead to less plays, less chances to score, & happier DC's.
College Football Coach Audit
247 Sports' Brandon Marcello did an incredible deep dive on the '22-'23 Coaching Carousel & Examining data of CFB coaching changes. Here's some of the key takeaways:
An eye-popping 34 support staffers in the SEC (analysts, quality control coaches and recruiting directors, etc.) were hired as on-field coaches following the 2022 season, according to 247Sports’ data. The promotions doubled the output by the Big Ten, its closest competitor. The Big Ten produced 17 assistant coaches from the analyst ranks.
Five fewer changes atop programs in the 2022-23 cycle resulted in as many as 50 fewer job openings (10 assistant coaches on each staff) to fill, which in part explains why the carousel slowed by 11.5% from a year ago.
Overall, 34.8% of a possible 1,463 positions changed via new hires or promotions compared to 40.2% during the 2021-22 cycle, according to 247Sports research.
The 133 FBS teams each hired or promoted an average of 3.8 coaches this offseason. That number is down slightly from 4.4 a year ago.
